Gratitude: Why it’s Important and How to Incorporate it Daily

 In Mindful Mum, Motherhood

There is increasing amounts of research to show a deep connection between the practice of gratitude and the emotional, physical and mental well being of an individual.

Spiritual healers and psychologists agree that there are endless benefits of practicing gratitude. Those who practice gratitude on a daily basis report taking more time to observe and introspect on various things inside and outside of their body. They feel happier and are filled with positive emotions.  Many of these people also experience improved sleeping patterns and strengthening of their immune systems. And these are just a few examples of the miraculous things that gratitude can do for you!

Here are a few tips on how you can incorporate the practice of gratitude in your daily life:

Keep a gratitude journal

One of the easiest ways to reap the benefits of gratitude is to make a ‘gratitude journal’. Make a habit of ending your day by writing down five to ten things that you are currently grateful for. After a few weeks, you are likely to notice an increase in your energy levels, reduced physical symptoms and a more optimistic attitude towards life.

A verbal dialogue on gratitude

If you’re not convinced about writing, you can also try a daily discussion on gratitude with a friend or family member. You could ask each other questions that indirectly lead to practicing gratitude e.g. “What was that one thing that made you really happy today?” The purpose of these discussions is to help boost your awareness about everything that you could be thankful for. They also help in building a positive connection with the person with whom you are sharing the experience.

Observe nature

If you’re feeling extremely low, stressed or anxious and are unable to make a list or talk to someone, simply take a walk outside and observe the trees, plants, birds and other elements of nature. This observation and appreciation of the nature is also a form of gratitude.
